Studio Park, Grand Rapids
What started as an idea for a movie theater in downtown Grand Rapids evolved into a mixed-use, $160 million development that encompasses 62,500 square feet on two downtown blocks. The project is anchored by a 9-screen movie theater and also includes restaurants, retail, housing, offices, hotel space, and a 200-seat concert venue dubbed The Listening Room.
All of this development is centered around a carefully designed outdoor space referred to as the Studio Park Piazza. This space includes a large outdoor movie screen and is framed by buildings on three sides. The flanking five-story buildings and the 60-foot wide piazza create a nearly 1:1 height to width ratio for the spatial enclosure - this forms an intimate pedestrian-scaled space that acts as the front door for the many retail and restaurants that line its edges.
The project was built on two surface parking lots and a former Michigan Department of Transportation highway off-ramp for US-131 and has helped to reframe this part of downtown into a more walkable and vibrant district.
The project also includes:
-
960-space parking structure that services the retail, office, hotel, residential, and restaurant spaces
-
106 residential loft apartments
-
155 room Canopy by Hilton hotel
-
7 story office building that became home to insurance giant Acrisure, which moved 400 jobs to downtown Grand Rapids
